School is now in session. With the end of summer in sight and flu season right behind, it’s inevitable that heading back to school leads to kids getting sick. But there are a few simple things we can all do to stay as healthy as possible during the school year.

Tips for Staying Healthy at School

Basic hand washing is incredibly important, and always remind your kids to avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth. Wearing a mask at school is another way to help keep germs at bay. And of course, stay home if you are sick.

If you are showing signs of COVID-19, the best thing to do is to stay home and test a day or two later. For the most up to date guidelines on when you can return to school after a positive test, visit the Chicago Department of Public Health website or cdc.org

Never underestimate the power of sleep. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, kids ages 5-12 need anywhere from 9-12 hours of sleep per night. If your child is not getting enough sleep, start shifting their bedtime earlier over the next week or two. And make time for kids to wind down at the end of the day before they go to bed. No screens, just calming activities.

It’s not too late to schedule your back to school check-up.

Many people have put off regular doctor appointments over the past few years as a result of the pandemic. But it’s time to get back on track. Especially when it comes to children, you don’t want them to get behind on their vaccination schedule. It’s never too late to catch up! Schedule your children’s regular pediatrician checkup today.
