Office of Medical Development

The Office of Medical Development is responsible for working with Thorek Memorial Hospital Medical Staff, and prospective staff members, acting as a resource during recruitment and throughout the physician’s tenure with the hospital.

The following is a description of some of the opportunities for growth and relationship for physicians considering membership and affiliation with Thorek - a growing and progressively evolving Hi-touch and Hi-tech hospital. For more information, contact Thorek’s Office of Medical Development at 773-975-1119.

    ASSOCIATE PROGRAM (Joint Sponsorship)

Graduating family practice or internal medicine graduates (associates) can join TMH through a shared financial sponsorship by both TMH and a TMH physician seeking an “associate” to join his/her busy practices. In essence, the associate’s market based salary is shared on a 50:50 split basis between hospital (50%) and the TMH physician in practice (50%). The associate’s responsibilities are divided between the hospital clinics and administrative assignments and the medical practice of the TMH physician they join. In addition to receiving 50% of their salary from TMH, the hospital provides mal-practice insurance, employee health insurance and other standard benefits including vacation and a CME conference subsidy. The joint sponsorship is available for up to a two-year period of time. The advantage of this program is that it gives the newly graduating physician associate an opportunity to enter private practice or continue in a full time salaried arrangement at the conclusion of the joint sponsorship.

    GUARANTEED SALARY

A limited number of salaried or contracted positions are available based on succession planning needs, community benefit and program development opportunities of the hospital. This can include a guaranteed salary arrangement whereby a new physician joins a practice associated with TMH. The hospital underwrites the start-up costs in the form of a low interest loan that is repaid (amortized) by the practice over a set period of time usually paid by the excess of revenues over budgeted expenses related to the new physician’s incremental growth within the practice.

    PROGRAM DIRECTORSHIPS

On an “as need basis” a limited number of program and clinical development opportunities exist for physician specialists to assist, plan, and provide expertise for either program and/or medical administrative and clinical committee work. This is paid for on an hourly basis. A set of responsibilities agreed to with concurrence of clinical department(s) leadership is established and the physician specialist fills out an activity report on a monthly basis.

    TEACHING OR TRAINING

There are on-going teachings and training opportunities that relate to support of staff of clinical programs and services. Payment is on an hourly basis depending on need. Such educational programs may be provided to registered nurses, physicians, and to residents and students in training.

    HOUSE STAFF PROGRAM

Openings for Qualified Board Certified Physicians to provide medical coverage to the medical surgical floors and ICU are available on an as needed basis. An attending staff member supervises this program.

    EMERGENCY ROOM CALL

Qualified primary care and specialists are assigned to emergency room call in blocks of one-week increments coordinated by the medical staff administrator in conjunction with clinical department chairs and the emergency room physicians. The hospital has an “Open ER Call” policy.

    PARTNERSHIP WITH GROUP PRACTICE

TMH can assist established group practices in recruiting a qualified associate or experienced physician to join their practice. The salary and benefits would be paid entirely by the group practice. The group practice would strengthen their affiliation with TMH through the addition of the new associate who would also be on staff at TMH.

    ACADEMIC AND/OR JOINT VENTURE RELATIONSHIP

TMH would enter an agreement with a reputable academic medical center to establish a new program at TMH or provide consultation services in needed specialty areas either on an inpatient or outpatient basis. A joint venture or shared services agreement, including related performance goals, would be established for sharing risks and rewards in the new program or services. The academic medical center would provide a physician specialist to lead the program and to establish standards of service.

    HOSPITAL/PHYSICIAN JOINT VENTURE (FUTURE)

TMH is considering development of new hi-tech/hi-touch outpatient diagnostic and minimally invasive patient care services and facilities to serve the ever-changing needs of its primary service area. As an incentive to recruit physicians it is open to exploring JV and/or ownership opportunities of these new program developments.

    PROFESSIONAL OFFICE BUILDING LEASES

There is currently 15,000 square feet of vacant office space available in TMH’s new Medical Office Building. Leasing rates for build out of space are running at $23.00 per square foot. Features include: free outdoor parking for staff and patients; easy access by public transportation; convenient location; significant services such as renal dialysis and diagnostic services; physical therapy; cable access to hospital medical information; easy access to Lakeshore drive; pharmacy; coffee shop; medical staff lounge; physically connected to hospital services including MRI and CT, emergency services, women’s health services; cardiac catherization imaging; oncology center; adult mental health, and out-patient surgery.
