Internal Medicine Residency Program

Thorek Memorial Hospital has embarked upon an exciting plan to establish a Residency Training Program in Internal Medicine.  The hospital recently submitted its application for establishing a new training program to the American Council of Graduate Medical Education Resident Review Committee and, pending a site visit review, it is anticipated the hospital could receive accreditation status sometime in 2009 with its first residents in training by July 2011.  This Program will be an affiliate of the University of Illinois School of Medicine.  A Residency Training Program in Internal Medicine will enable Thorek to further its community hospital's mission to include the teaching of medical students and residents in primary care, which is a crucial societal need.  Some key elements of the program include:

1.) Developing a medical teaching service available 24/7 for attending staff to provide medical coverage to their patients with the goals of enhancing medical education and patient services.

2.) Increasing participation of Medical Staff in training and educational programs including Patient Rounds, Journal Clubs, Library, Continuing Medical Education Lectures, etc.

3.) Creating mechanisms for physician succession planning, partnering with physician practices, new program development, and expanding outreach capabilities to the service area of the hospital.

4.) Creating a "Learning Environment" that promotes interaction between faculty and students enriching the educational experience of residents/students and keeps Medical Staff attuned to latest advancements in Medicine.

5.) Improving the quality of patient care.

6.) Furthering Thorek's tradition of teaching initiated through the late Dr Phil Thorek who was an Associate Professor within the UIC Department of Surgery.

Opportunity for Prospective Faculty

Under the leadership of Program Director, Dr. Harold Diaz, an experienced medical educator, and in conjunction with the leadership of the Medical Staff, we are developing the faculty and facility resources necessary to achieve a vibrant and effective Internal Medicine Residency.  We welcome the opportunity to meet with practicing physicians who have medical education backgrounds and who have an interest in training of residents.  Faculty responsibilities include teaching and supervision during resident rotations in clinics, making rounds and participation in conferences and lectures.  Thorek is continuing its transformation into a 21st century hospital and we welcome physicians who desire to be partners in its future growth and development.  If you have an interest in joining our dynamic and growing team please contact Ed Cucci, Chief of Strategy and Medical Development, at 773-975-1208.
